Calculator Formula and sources
Formula and assumptions
This page explains the unofficial conversion used by the calculator. It is not the official West Midlands Grammar Schools or local authority standardisation model.
What the calculator does
1. Convert to percentages
If a parent enters correct answers and total questions, the calculator first computes the section percentage. If direct % correct is entered, that percentage is used.
percentage = correct_answers / total_questions
2. Estimate a standardised section
Each section is mapped onto a rough standardised scale with mean 100. The assumed practice-test average is 55% and the spread is 18 percentage points.
section = 100 + 15 * ((percentage - 0.55) / 0.18) + age_adjustment
3. Combine sections
English and verbal reasoning are averaged into a verbal component. This matches the published West Midlands weighting: English/verbal reasoning 50%, mathematics 25%, and non-verbal reasoning 25%.
final = round(average(English, VR) + average(Maths, NVR))
4. Optional birth-month adjustment
The calculator only asks for birth month, not a full date of birth. The month adjustment is deliberately small and cannot reproduce the official age standardisation.
age_adjustment = (month_index - 5.5) * 0.18
School list and score context
The calculator lists the official West Midlands partnership state grammar schools in Birmingham, Shropshire, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Warwickshire. Private and independent schools are not included. Rows are sorted by the highest published 2026 score context found on official school, council, or foundation pages.

Important limits
Not an official score
- The raw marks and exact official standardisation are not public.
- The real score can move differently by cohort, paper difficulty, age, provider model, and rounding.
- This tool should be used for practice planning, not admissions decisions.
Not an offer prediction
- Offers can depend on priority area, address, preference order, gender for single-sex schools, and published admissions rules.
- Children on the same score may be ordered using other criteria such as distance.
- Published thresholds can change by year.
